About NewsWaves

News Waves shows the evolution of poignant terms 'isolation', 'fire', 'Cronulla', 'peace', and 'understanding' (moving down, getting darker in colour) across the news in Australia for the last few months up to the anniversary of the events of Cronulla in December. We can see the change and flow of previous news items and 'hot topics' across the months.

We count the number of news items that pop up for each term when we search through the news for that day, and then link each day together so that they form waves. (The image below shows all the data we've collected from mid-September to mid-November; the weekly dips in news items because there's less news on weekends!)

The waves are simply a series of traditional bar-charts which have been connected using curves:
